In this interview Elizabeth Raybould talks about how she began her career in nursing in London in 1945, aged nineteen. She trained at the Central Middlesex, qualified in 1948 and soon became a ward sister in a male gastroenterology ward. Later posts were sister at the Royal Bucks in Aylesbury then unqualified tutor at Stoke Mandeville. She did the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Sister Tutor course then moved to Sheffield as tutor, returning to Charing Cross and Fulham school after three years and becoming deputy principal in 1962, and later principal of West London, Charing Cross and Fulham, which included Queen Charlotte's. She talks about the changes in nursing schools and the movement towards larger schools, and her work at Charing Cross. While there she wrote books with Eve Bendall and improved the library. Her next job was principal in South Belfast and she lectured at Queen's University, Londonderry and Dublin and wrote two books. She became director of nurse education, at Greenwich and Bexley, an area school of nursing. She talks about further career developments including: membership of GNC and work as GNC Registrar; Briggs report; the RCN; colleagues; membership of RCN Council; Department of Health; Ken Clarke; scholarship to New Zealand and Australia; position on the editorial board of the Journal of Advanced Nursing; Northern Ireland and the Troubles; Catherine Hall; RCN Fellowship.
